She mentioned this one symptom and my brain immediately went somewhere else

I had a call with a woman this weekend.

We were talking through her history when she said, almost in passing:

“I have explosive bowel movements.”

And my brain immediately went:

We need to look at her gut.

Not because that one symptom gives me an answer for why she has experienced miscarriage.

It doesn’t.

But because it’s a clue.

And this morning, I’m still thinking about it.

Because I wonder how many women have symptoms like this that have become so normal to them, they don’t even think to mention them when talking about recurrent miscarriage.

The bloating they’ve lived with for years.

The bowel movements that have always been unpredictable.

The foods they know will send them running to the toilet.

The digestive symptoms they’ve learned to plan their day around.

When you’ve experienced recurrent miscarriage, it’s understandable that your attention goes straight to the tests labelled “fertility” or “miscarriage.”

My brain doesn’t stop there.

I want to know what else your body has been doing.

What changed.

What’s been there for years.

What you've learned to live with.

What was happening before, during and between your pregnancies.

And whether any of those pieces deserve further investigation or a conversation with the appropriate healthcare professional.

Because sometimes the thing that makes me lean in is the detail you nearly didn’t mention.

This is exactly the kind of thinking I’ll be taking you inside during Day 2 of Recurrent Miscarriage: Looking at the Whole Picture.

On 27 October at 7pm BST, grief specialist Annika Palmer and I will host The Space in Between: Grief, Hope, & Trying Again After Recurrent Loss.

Then on 28 October at 7pm BST, it’ll be just me for Putting the Pieces Together After Recurrent Miscarriage, where I’ll show you how I look beyond isolated results and begin connecting the wider picture before you try again.

The two-day masterclass is free.

You finally get some answers. Then you have more questions.
You finally get some answers. And somehow, you have more questions. A blood result comes back. Something is slightly outside the range. A scan mentions something you weren't expecting. A test comes back normal, which should feel reassuring, except you're still left wondering why this keeps happening. Or somebody suggests another investigation and suddenly you're Googling a term you'd never hear...
You don't get to just feel excited anymore
You don't get to just feel excited anymore. A positive pregnancy test used to mean something quite simple. You're pregnant. But after you’ve experienced miscarriage more than once, it can mean twenty things at once. You look at the second line and your heart skips a beat and your mind starts working overtime. When you could have bloods done. Whether that cramp feels familiar. Whether your sympt...
You start going back over everything
You start going back over everything. The coffee you drank that morning. The workout you did before you knew. The week at work when you barely stopped. The glass of wine. The flight. The hot bath. The supplement you forgot to take. Something somebody mentioned in a fertility group at 11pm that you've never even heard of before. You know you can drive yourself mad doing this. You know there may ...
